The simplest thing to do with your notes
Not many people does it thoroughly, including me.
Visit, re-visit, and engage with your notes —
these simple words hold a lot of meaning. There is no doubt that it takes time and experience for self-realization, especially when it comes to note-taking. It is one of the biggest things in my everyday life and, as old-fashioned as it may seem, pen and paper will always be my first love.
I keep notes of many things, including my workday. This includes project-related notes, tasks, daily notes, journal entries, and more. I also keep reading and book notes, ideas and thoughts, poems and short stories, and blog entries. However, with so many notes, it can be hard to keep track of them all.
The irony is that, while we are busy collecting notes, we often miss opportunities to work on the knowledge we have in the system. I am guilty of this myself, but I am working consciously to improve in this aspect of note-taking.
One idea to better manage notes and knowledge is to implement a ‘weekly review’ process. This is similar to project and task management, and involves building a habit of reviewing all your collected notes, ideas, meeting notes, book notes, blog ideas, and journal entries once a week. The entire process can be done based on the kind of notes you collect. In my case, I find that 30 minutes on a Friday evening is the best time to relook at my collected notes.
During this weekly review, I may organize my notes further and make new connections. This is one of the most beneficial things you can do with your knowledge.
In conclusion, note-taking is a vital part of our daily lives. By making a habit of reviewing our notes on a regular basis, we can better manage our knowledge and make new connections, leading to greater self-realization. Share your ideas and experiences with note-taking — there is always room for improvement.
