Learn more, Act more…!
not everything you came across is worth your time.
This is the need of the time to keep learning, keep updating your knowledge to match the pace of the change, the shift that is happening in the ‘area of expertise or domain’.
I do not know from when and where I have picked up the idea of ‘self & continuous learning’ but for sure that’s the best gift of this information age.
Be in it of any field, we all are ‘knowledge workers’ And there are so many great universities like YouTube, Twitter, Medium, LinkedIn and so many other ‘Online Courses’ which are working constantly to support you in your journey of continuous learning and exploring the subject.
This is not only to help you in advancing in your domain but to allow you to look outside of your expertise and explore other areas of interest.
But how well we are keeping up with this challenge, not so well actually.
This had happen never before.
We are in a world of constant information consumption and this makes us think, that we are learning constantly and that consumption and processing of information is helping us, is it really?
The most important part is:
How well you filter all the irrelevant information — from the book, the distracted mind by Adam Gazzaley MD, PhD
Let us agree, consumption of information does not make us a good learner.
To make myself a bit better learner, this is what I am doing:
Limit your information consumption
It is said that ‘excess of anything is not good’ and that is true for information as well.
Keep a tab on what kind of information you are consuming and processing.
Every bite of information should be scanned for its future usability and contribution.
Avoid irrelevant and general information collection.
Take notes
For me personally, If I am not taking notes, I may not act on it.
Believe me, first step to move from curiosity to interest is to take relevant notes on the subject.
Note-taking does not help if you only take notes, you need to visit your notes time to time, filter the non-required, prioritize the relevant information and process it accordingly.
Today’s notes can be tomorrow’s action plan — Treat it well.
Act more often
Action completes your learning.
Information consumption and collection is of no use, if we can not practice it and act on it.
If you have decided to work on something, DO it and DO it more often.
If the subject still interest you, keep your learning curve up and you may find your passion.
I am really impressed with Richard Feynman — An American Theoretical Physicist with his learning technique ‘the Feynman technique’ with 4 simple steps:
- Choose a concept/subject
- Teach it or explain it to a Toddler
- Identify the gaps and go back to source material
- Review and Simply
The best part of this technique is to make things ‘simple’ — simple to explain and simple to understand.
